How licensing works in Moftgate - modules, activation, status, expiry, and the free Endpoint Visibility tier.

What Is Licensing#

A Moftgate license is an encrypted key that enables the modules available on your appliance. When you activate a license, the platform reads which modules are enabled and how many endpoints each module covers. The license is tied to your appliance through a unique machine identifier, so it cannot be moved to another installation without reactivation.

The appliance checks your license periodically and reports its health to the central Moftgate server. This happens automatically in the background - you do not need to manage it manually. If the central server is temporarily unreachable, the appliance continues operating with the last known valid license, so your security coverage is never interrupted.

Free tier

Endpoint Visibility is free for the first year for up to 200 endpoints - no paid license required. Paid modules (DLP, SSPM, DSPM) require an active license.

Available Modules#

Your license determines which modules are enabled. Each module focuses on a different area of security. Here is what each one does:

Module	What it does
Endpoint Visibility	Endpoint discovery, visibility, and agent management. This module is free for the first year - up to 200 endpoints at no cost.
DLP	Data Loss Prevention - detects sensitive content and enforces policies to prevent data leakage across your endpoints.
SSPM	SaaS Security Posture Management - assesses cloud application configurations and identifies risks in your SaaS estate.
DSPM	Data Security Posture Management - classifies data in cloud data stores and surfaces exposure and misconfiguration risks.

Endpoint Visibility is always included

Every license - including the automatic onboarding license - includes Endpoint Visibility. The free tier covers up to 200 endpoints. If your license grants a higher quota, that higher number applies.

Activating a License#

There are two ways to get a license onto your appliance:

Automatic onboarding - the first time you access the platform with no license and no admin user, an onboarding wizard guides you through setup and generates a 365-day trial license automatically.
Manual activation - if you receive a license key from Moftgate, you can activate it yourself from the License page.

To manually activate a license key you received from Moftgate:

Open the License page
Navigate to System → License in the sidebar. If no license is active yet, the platform automatically redirects you here during first-time setup.

Paste your license key
Enter the encrypted license key you received from Moftgate into the activation field. The key is verified locally before it is accepted.

Activate
Click Activate. If the key is valid and not expired, the license is stored and the enabled modules appear immediately. If the key is already active or has expired, you will see a clear error message.

Verify modules
After activation, check the module list on the same page to confirm which modules are enabled and how many endpoints each covers.

Before you activate

Make sure the license key is for this appliance. A key that is already active on another installation will not work. If you enter an expired key, it will be rejected and no license file will be written.

Checking License Status#

You can check your current license status at any time from the License page in the platform:

Open the sidebar and navigate to System → License.
The page shows your license status, enabled modules, machine ID, validity period, and the last time the appliance checked in with the central server.

Here is what each field on the License page tells you:

Field	Meaning
Status	Active, expiring soon, or expired - based on the license end date.
Enabled modules	Which modules are active and the endpoint quota for each.
Machine ID	A unique identifier for this appliance, used to bind the license to this installation.
Validity period	The start and end dates of your current license.
Last check-in	The timestamp of the most recent license verification with the central server.

Expiry and Renewal#

Every license has a validity period. As the end date approaches, the platform warns you so you have time to renew. Here is what to expect:

When 30 days or fewer remain, an amber "License expiring soon" banner appears at the top of every page so you have time to renew.
When the license expires, you are redirected to the License page and a red "License expired" banner is shown. Premium modules stop working until a valid license is activated.
The free Endpoint Visibility tier (up to 200 endpoints) continues to work even after a paid license expires - you never lose basic visibility.
To renew, obtain a new license key from Moftgate and activate it on the License page. The new key takes effect immediately.

Expired license

When your license expires, paid modules stop working and you are redirected to the License page. The free Endpoint Visibility tier (up to 200 endpoints) continues to work, so you never lose basic endpoint visibility. Activate a new license key to restore full functionality.

Frequently Asked Questions#

What happens if the central server is unreachable?

The appliance is designed to work offline first. If the central license server cannot be reached during a periodic check, the appliance logs it silently and continues operating with the last known valid license. Your endpoints and policies keep running without interruption.

Is Endpoint Visibility free for the first year?

Yes. The Endpoint Visibility module provides a free tier of up to 200 endpoints for the first year. Paid modules (DLP, SSPM, DSPM) require an active license.

What happens during first-time setup?

When you first access the platform with no license and no admin user, you are guided through an onboarding wizard. You enter your company and admin details, and a 365-day trial license with 200 Endpoint Visibility endpoints is generated and activated automatically. No manual key entry is needed for the initial setup.

Can I activate a license key I received from Moftgate?

Yes. Go to System → License, paste the key into the activation field, and click Activate. The key is verified locally - if it is already active or expired, you will see an error message and the key will not be stored.

How often does the appliance check my license?

The appliance checks your license status hourly by contacting the central Moftgate server. It also sends a system health report every 5 minutes, which includes CPU, memory, disk, service statuses, and endpoint counts. This helps the Moftgate SOC team monitor the health of your installation.

How do I get a new license or renew an expired one?

Contact info@moftgate.com to purchase or renew a license. Once you receive your new key, activate it on the System → License page. The new license takes effect immediately.
